Glorious June

The forecast rain last week got all the neighbours out collecting grass for silage before it rained. There were tractors mowing late into the evening and we had a hectic day of tractors with empty trailers flying down the hill, and coming back a little while later very slowly with a heavy load of grass.

It's quiet again now with just the commuters and school run morning and evening with the occasional lorry and car and horse going by.

The silage crop is down around 40% from last year, so second, third, and more cuts will be made until there is enough to go through the winter. Organic farms have a particular problem as they have to use their own forage and can't buy in much extra keep for the cattle.

Odessa has settled in well - she is so quiet and easy to milk. I milk her out each evening while she has a bit of corn and some fresh grass from the weedy bits of the garden. I've been hedge cutting this morning and she and the calf have been tidying up the tasty bits. There's very little grass on the field as the sheep are taking it all. 6 lambs are to to go off next week so that should help a little.
